Price and Availability
Well, let's start with the looks although it is worth mentioning that this is where the opinions of most users would differ depending on tastes and preferences. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to matters to do with aesthetics. Still, we will not shy away from highlighting some few opinions of our own, right? The Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a body built with a perfect blend of aesthetics in mind and durability also inculcated into the equation. In other words, it has a very sleek body look with sharp corners but with an innovative glass loop on the back side. This glass body is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Its body is thus shiny and reflective giving it a very glossy finish. The only downside that perhaps subject to opinions is the large bezel that Sony has stuck with for a while. That side, there is no denying that the Xperia XZ has a super sharp display otherwise known as 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution display coupled with HDR (High Dynamic Range) viewing capabilities. iPhone 7 Plus certainly has a better body look even though it is more or less the same design that we have seen in past generations of iPhone models. Still, the iPhone 7 Plus also looks pretty sharp albeit with a 2K (1,920 x 1,080) display. Don’t be fooled though, this phone may not come with many pixels but it compensates this with a technology known as Apple's super-sharp Retina technology which has a lot to do with the great display on the phone.
In terms of hardware, the Xperia slightly trumps the iPhone 7 thanks to its processing capabilities. This is also owed to the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor also found in Samsung Galaxy S8. The difference here is that the processor is controlled at a clock speed of 2.45GHz making it quite robust when compared to iPhone 7 Plus’ A Fusion chip operating at a clock speed of 2.35GHz. As for the storage, the iPhone comes with an array of internal memory sizes to pick from ranging from 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB coupled with a 3GB RAM. Here the Xperia is slightly better as it comes with better RAM in 4GB RAM and mainly 64GB internal storage memory. Here is the complete look at the hardware specs.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium specs
Let’s shift our attention to matters screen. Well, the iPhone has a 5.5-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD (1920 x 1080) while the Sony Xperia XZ has 5.5in 4K HDR Triluminous display (2160 x 3840). The Xperia’s screen is protected with a powerful Corning Gorilla Glass 5 in much the same way that Apple is though Corning is not allowed to reveal this.
If you are a camera person then you might also want to know how the two phones compare in camera specs. Perhaps the most attractive bit with the Xperia XZ is what Sony is calling the Motion Eye. Wondering what the heck this is? Well, it is a feature that allows the camera to start taking pics when it senses motion. This camera is powered by a 19MP sensor for the rear camera plus a 5-axis electronic image stabilization (EIS), PDAF and laser autofocus. Moreover, it also features a f/2.0 aperture not to mention that it can record 4k type of videos at 30fps. The front camera of the Xperia XZ has a 12MP sensor which takes top quality pictures. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, comes with a dual camera setup of 12MP. Both the front and the rear camera are also super quality with a wide aperture range coupled a 2X camera zoom together with optical image stabilization guaranteeing sharp photos even with little lighting.
Now, let’s turn our attention to the battery capacity duels, a feat that is fast growing to be very vital in assessing phone these days. The Xperia XZ comes bundled with a battery rated 3230mAh which is quite good although Sony doesn’t offer any concrete estimates in the realm of battery life. The only thing said is that you will get an all day’s charge with this phone. Apple offers some specific estimates with the 2900mAh battery-they assure you around 13 hours in 4G connections and around 15 hours of battery life in Wi-Fi connections.
In terms of water and dust resistance, the Sony Xperia XZ comes with a better rating i.e the IP68 rating compared to the IP67 in the case of the IPhone 7 Plus. This is to say that the Xperia XZ can withstand sitting inside about 1.5m of water for about 30 minutes without spoiling. Of course, this is theoretical but the bottom line is that both phones can withstand you making some mistakes around water!
In matters security, both the Xperia and the iPhone boast some great security features including an awesome fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner can be useful in boosting secure interaction between you and your phone. The similarities end there as the IPhone’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner is built into the home button while Sony opted for another approach by fitting the fingerprint scanner into the power button on the right edge of the phone.
The Xperia XZ Premium comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat featuring what is known as the Xperia UI. This is a product of some tweaks of the native Android system by Sony in a bid to adapt the OS to fit in with the demands of the consumer. The UI is actually pretty awesome at managing power usage on the phone not to mention that it comes with an assistant to help you handle your phone’s memory. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, is bundled with iOS 10 that is certainly full of exciting features. For instance, isn’t it great that the OS allows users to delete anything even the native apps? Still, this is not the headline grabber instead many are loving the updated iMessage app in this new OS-a messaging app that is looking to gain ground on the likes of Whatsapp. That said, there are some flaws that need to be fixed in future versions of this messaging app most notably the crammed applications.
The Xperia is currently available for purchase online in stores such as Amazon, Best Buy, Fry’s Electronics, B&H among others. The buying price for the 64GB version at Amazon is $799. At Best Buy, the 32 GB version goes for $449 while at Fry’s the retail price is $499. The Xperia XZ Premium is proving to be a very capable alternative of the iPhone 7 Plus. In fact, it is a cheaper alternative thanks to a wide array of good specs matching the classy to the iPhone 7 Plus. In other words, if you are looking for a phone that inculcates a speedy processor, a magnificent display, and a camera but you can’t afford an iPhone 7 Plus then the Xperia XZ Premium is the phone for you! It is also a matter of time before we find if the Xperia turns out to be the most innovative phone of the year.
