The Scariest Anime Reviews

Here is a list of the scariest anime series:

1. Courage the Cowardly Dog

All the 90s kids know what Courage the Cowardly Dog is and why it is on this list. Courage the Cowardly Dog is perhaps one of the scariest animated shows out there. The pilot episode of the show, called The Chicken from Outer Space, was enough to set the tone of the entire series. Written and Directed by the very talented animator, John R. Dilworth, this show became an instant hit, despite the disturbing visuals. Moreover, the pilot episode of the show was also nominated for an Academy Award in 1996 for the best animated short film. Over the years, Dilworth’s studio, Stretch Films, has been critically acclaimed for its productions such the Dirty Bird and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

The plot follows the lives of Muriel, her husband Eustace, and their wide-eyed dog named Courage. Muriel is a sweet little soul with a nurturing nature.  Eustace, on the other hand, is the opposite of Muriel, a bitter, self-centered old man. And, the star of the show, Courage is their pet dog, a very anxious and “cowardly” dog who is easily scared of anything. Yet, he always steps up and saves the people he cares about i.e., his owners and friends. So, despite being easily frightened, he is still the bravest character throughout. As the series progresses, each episode brings something new and scary for the viewers, leaving them absolutely terrified.

2. Another

Another is one of the most popular and favorite horror series of all time. It is an anime show loaded with unpredictable, gut churning plot twists. From disturbing death scenes to creepy sound effects, this show is all about horror. You will truly get a terrifying experience.  It is based on a manga by Noizi Ito. The anime is directed by Tsutomu Mizushima and the characters are designed by Yuriko Ishii. The anime is greatly inspired by the Final Destination movies and has a similar plot. It comes from an adult novel series of the same name, written by Yukito Ayatsuji.

The storyline follows Kouichi Sakakibara who transfers into Yomiyama North's class 3-3. Kouichi is the main protagonist. He feels that something strange is going on and senses a strange presence. He is drawn to a girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eye patch; she is mysterious and nobody else can see her. Just when things couldn’t get any weirder, a mysterious and violent curse takes over, killing people in the most gruesome ways. Everyone lives in the fear of this curse while trying to find a way to end it. All in all, this anime series is a great thriller horror that gets extremely gritty and bloody sometimes. It is not recommended for the faint of heart. Although being a short series, it is very high impact and keep you on the edge of your seat. The suspense, horror, and intensity, are what encapsulates you. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more.

3. Parasyte: The Maxim

Parasyte: The Maxim is a sci-fi horror anime about an alien invasion. The main protagonist of this underrated masterpiece is Shinichi Izumi, who lives with his parents in a small peaceful village – until the parasitic aliens start to invade the planet. One such parasite invades Shinichi's room while he is asleep and proceeds to crawl into his arm. He instantly wakes up and fights the parasite, trying to stop him from taking over his brain. But the parasite infiltrates his right hand. Shinichi strikes a deal with the alien parasite that he won't kill it if it doesn’t take over his brain. He then names this alien part of his body, Migi. And, they set on a quest to fight other parasitic aliens who have taken over the world.

The show has amazing character development and flawlessly portrays the psychology and philosophy of each character. Medicine Seller is the main protagonist of the anime with vast knowledge of the supernatural world. The show follows his journey as he fights strange spirits called Mononoke.

Mononoke has redefined horror anime. Even though the animations are light and fun, with the original anime flair, it is still a horror show. So, despite being a horror show from the horror genre, Mononoke does not try to scare you. In just 12 episodes, the creators have created a world that will live on forever in the anime fandom. The way the story has been executed is what will actually creep you out. In short, Mononoke shines bright with a minimal focus on scaring people and maximum focus on telling a good human story filled with strong, pure and powerful emotions. This avant-garde horror anthology is truly one of the best mystery psychological horrors you will ever watch.

5. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

If you are in the mood for something hardcore, you better watch this anime. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is based on a survival horror game of the same name. The game was released in 1996. Corpse Party follows a group of friends who perform a ritual to stay friends forever. However, the ritual goes wrong and they end up transporting to a new dimension. In this new world, they must fight and save themselves from the ghosts gruesomely trying to kill them all. These ghosts are the souls of Kisaragi Academy, formerly called Heavenly Host Elementary, where the murder of innocent students and staff took place. The friends try to figure out how to go back while surviving all the mysterious forces haunting the school.  All in all, this show is unrealistic but at the same time, feels as real as it can get. Corpse Party is nothing short of a bloody murder spree with all the classic elements if a good horror show. It is gory, grotesque, horrifying and absolutely disturbing. Although this anime is only 4 episodes long, it is enough to leave you scared for a long time.
