Optimized storage – The best feature offered by macOS Sierra
Desktops and laptops have now become very prevalent devices in everyone’s life. Presently, more than anything else, the configuration of these devices matters a lot! It is seen that most of us tend to fill the hard drive of the device with stuff that we collect all through the year. It can easily be compared with an attic or a basement that slowly gets filled up with some stuff. There are some that we use on a regular basis and there are some that we completely forget about. At a certain point, the storage becomes so much that you just want to get rid of it. But, when you have GBs of data on our hard drive, it’s really tough to sort them out. Here the new macOS Sierra comes into play. It has an added feature of optimized storage and that’s what we are going to talk about.
What is optimized storage?
Before we move on explaining how the system works as optimized storage, you should have a clear concept about what it is. It’s an action performed by the macOS Sierra. It optimizes the storage space of your device automatically. The process takes all the files that you’ve stored on the iCloud over the years and moves them off of your computer if the device’s hard drive is too full! It manages everything in a convenient manner so that you can get even the moved off files quite easily.
This optimized storage by macOS Sierra offers exceptional features that we will certainly discuss below of this discussion. Let’s now dig a little deeper into this process.
Here’s how you can access the optimized storage
The iPhones with macOS Sierra come with an intelligent option of controlling the optimized storage manually. You can access the option in two simple ways. The first one is the simpler one between these two. Here you will have to do nothing but to wait until the memory gets full. When it is, it will automatically pop up stating if you want to optimize the storage space. Clicking on “yes” will take you to the optimized storage tool window directly.
However, if you are following a manual process, then you need to follow these steps in order to reach the tool window. Let’s take a step by step approach to this:
- First, you need to click on the Apple icon on the top left of your skin.
- You will get the dropdown and from there, you need to click on the about this Mac.
- There you will find the storage window and need to click on that.
- After you find everything right in place, you then need to click on the Details.
This will actually open up the optimizing storage tool window where you will get the four optimized storage tools.
Optimized storage options
You will get four different options over there which are - iCloud storage, optimize storage, empty trash and reduce clutter. We will take a brief introduction to all these four steps.
This is actually a one-stop-shop for storage. If you store in the iCloud library, you can easily turn on the desktop documents syncing. Turning it on will let you access the iCloud syncing features. If this option is already enabled in your system, it will not affect the iCloud storage any further but, if you haven’t enabled, here’s the process
- Click the “Store in iCloud”
- You will get checkbox stating – store files from desktop and documents in iCloud Drive tick this and all files in your desktop and Mac documents will automatically store in iCloud.
- Also, tick the box states – store photos and videos in iCloud photo library to store all the original photos and videos in iCloud.
- Click on the store in iCloud to enable the option.
This feature enables storing the media files that you haven’t already stored in iCloud especially, the movies and TV shows that you’ve seen on the iTunes. Selecting this option will help to remove these files from your desktop and if you wish to see them again, you can simply download them again from iTunes. This feature lets you store the email attachments as well. You can set to store all your email attachments to the cloud so that you can download them whenever you want.
First, you need to click on “optimize” in the optimize storage section and then you need to click on “optimize” again to enable the feature.
If your trash bin keeps on adding files and you often forget to remove the files on a regular basis, Mac’s empty trash is just the thing you need to use. It doesn’t let you realize that you are stocking up digital wastages for months after months. The Empty trash will automatically enable a feature that will remove items and files that have been there in the trash for more than 30 days. You don’t need to think of it anymore! Click on “Turn On” in the section of empty trash from optimized storage and then click on turn on again to enable the feature.
This is one feature that doesn’t perform automatically and you need to clean the files on your Mac manually. In the category list, left side of the optimized storage window you will see folders that store files that are older and could be removed from your Mac. You can review the files from the Reduce Clutter section of the window or you can manually select a folder to see the files. This will let you go through the individual files and decide which one to delete and which one to keep.
So, these are four features of Optimized Storage in Mac that you can use for better storage alternatives on your computer.
