Video shooting & production tips and tricks for Vloggers, Youtubers and more.
A lot of the most successful vloggers on YouTube like to diversify their channels by posting a different kind of video once in a while. It is important to be consistent, but it is also important to keep things fresh and interesting. To help you brainstorm what kinds of new, fun, videos you can make we have made a list of the top YouTube video ideas for 2016.
YouTube’s top video from 2015 was the music video to Silento’s Watch Me, and numerous YouTubers and TV personalities capitalized on its success by doing their own renditions of the featured dance. From trained dancers to people’s grandfathers a lot of 2015’s biggest videos involved someone doing the nae nae.
By now this specific trend is a bit dated, but just as Watch Me was preceded by Gangnam Style there will be a new viral dance or pop song in 2016. How you incorporate this song or dance into a video will depend on what type of videos you usually make. If you are a daily vlogger then it makes no sense for you to post a dance video, or do a cover of the song. Those are not the only ways to jump on the bandwagon. If you like posting rants, do a rant about how much this song is annoying you (or how much you unwillingly love it). If you try to be funny in your videos then make reference jokes. Your viewers will like the feeling that you are engaged with the same culture as they are.
A lot of prank videos performed very well last year, and many of the videos that have trended this year have also been pranks. Pranks can be elaborate – the third most popular video last year was a prank involving a ball pit – or simple. Late night talk shows often create hilarious prank videos just by sending a correspondent out to say odd things to people on the street. You can make these types of videos too just by coming up with something funny to approach people with and having a friend film it.
There is a segment on the Jimmy Kimmel show called Mean Tweets which gets a lot of views on YouTube. In this segment celebrities are asked to read out mean things people have tweeted about them. This both shows the audience that they can laugh at themselves and highlights how ignorant their haters can be. If you have gotten enough comments – nice and mean – then doing a video where you read then could be a big hit for you.
Hopefully you have not gotten enough mean comments to make an entire video of them. If you make a comment reading video then most of it should be about giving shout outs to people who have said funny or kind things in response to your videos. This will encourage people to comment in the hopes that they might get their comments read too. If you do have a few mean comments then you should definitely read those as well to demonstrate your ability to laugh off trolls.
People really like watching other people react to things. Videos in the lane of ‘Teens React to Panic! At the Disco’ get a lot of views. So do play-troughs of horror games with reaction videos of the gamer’s face. If you feel like you might have a strong reaction to a video, song, or other piece of media then point a camera at yourself while you watch or listen to it. If you do not think that your reactions will be funny or interesting then consider asking one of your grandparents if they might like to be in your video.
Live streams are becoming increasingly popular, especially with the rise of apps like Periscope. YouTube allows you to post a live streaming video and if you have built up a bit of a following you should consider doing one. Viewers will love being able to interact with you in real time. Besides video comments it might be useful to create a hashtag for your live stream that people can use to talk to you on Twitter. Make sure to respond to as many people as you can. If you schedule a live stream ahead of time then your subscribers will plan to participate, so you should get a decent turn out.
You can also use a Google Hangout to make a live collaboration video with other YouTubers who may not live near you. This will be especially useful for your viewers if you both run information based channels. This way there is a greater chance that somebody on your panel will be able to answer any technical question that comes up. Even if you are both daily life/personality vloggers a joint livestream is still a great idea. It will bring viewers in who are fans of only one of the vloggers and introduce them to new YouTube channels. Everybody’s subscriber count could go up.
